Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

A Youth Fishing Derby was held at Hodsdon Shores on Ossipee Lake during the recent school vacation week. Derby Day was a glorious winter day --- the best we could have hoped for. The sun was shining and the fish were biting. Our first and youngest fisherman, Emily Adjutant, immediately caught two fish and earned the prize for smallest fish. Issy Eldridge won best overall catch and other prizes were won by Tim Adjutant (longest fish), Brad LeBrecque (longest perch) and Audrey Eldridge (raffle). On the following Saturday, turkey bowling games, scenic plan rides and a BBQ were held. Youth and adults alike bowled with frozen turkeys as balls and frozen liter soda bottles as pins. It was more fun than and just as challenging as any indoor bowling game. Those who wanted to see the sights from a new perspective were able to enjoy scenic plane rides around Lake Ossipee and the Ossipee Mountains –all majestic with new coats of snow.

The success of both events was due to the time, efforts, support and enthusiasm of many people. Special thanks go to Anne Ward who coordinated the events and to her husband Tim Ward who managed to find time and materials to build a spectacular trailer for “Derby Central” as well as a fantastic, stylish bob house. Conservation Officer Mark Hensel and Poacher of New Hampshire Fish and Game Region II demonstrated tracking techniques and I think Poacher actually was the highlight of derby day. Nick Laganis, Brian Newbegin, Wolfeboro Bay Outfitters and Gene Veraka, Indian Mound Hardware supplied us with our bait and tackle needs. Rick Morgan, Brad Eldridge and Paul Harvey ran the augers to make fishing holes and provided the much needed extra hands. Henry Granahan and Kim Altomare, both full of team spirit, was a great help wherever needed. Ossipee Concerned Citizens provided cocoa and Jen Buzzell of Granny Gordon’s delicious cookies. Joe Ferreira, Yankee Smoke House cooked up yummy sandwiches.

Friday’s snowstorm created some challenges for the turkey bowling and scenic plane rides. If not for the heroic efforts of Bill Grover, Scott Ashley, Tunney (Les) Currier, Kim Altomare, Glen Horne, and Tim Ward the airstrip and bowling alleys might have been lost. Plowing the runway took place throughout the storm and into the wee hours of the next day. We’d also like to thank the volunteers who ferried riders to the planes, supervised bowling, sold tickets, monitored the runway, made signs and ran the snack area: Marilee Ferrill and Carol Gartland of Maxfield Realty; Jean Hansen, Linda and Jerry Littlefield, Perla Olsen, Jane Goodwin, Ralph Wurster, Pat Jones, Elizabeth and Bob Gillette of the Ossipee Main Street Program; Glen and Sarah Horne of Ossipee Valley Aviation; Lt. Jason Griffin, FF Andrew Bartolini and FF Dana Cullen, Jr. of the Center Ossipee Fire Department; Randy Hayford of Medstar; Jim Summer of RMS Mortgage. A special thank you is due Diane and Bill Sheehan who graciously offered access to the lake through Camp Sokokis.

Finally, I’d like to thank you the Greater Ossipee Area Chamber of Commerce, especially President Steve Sousa and Treasurer Bill Grover, and other committee members who worked tirelessly on the Chamber’s inaugural Blizzard festival.

With deepest appreciation for everyone’s help,

Sarah Millette Executive Director Ossipee Main Street Program

Letter to the Editor, Conway Daily Sun

Dear Editor:

Now that the holidays are over, we’d like to take a moment to thank you for your support of the Second Annual Chefs’ Pants Off. This event is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to show our appreciation and thanks to veterans who have given so much to all of us.

As you know, the “Pants Off” was born from an idea a Marine and veteran who wanted to do something for both active duty service men and women and veterans around the holidays. Last year, the funds generated from the event helped families of some active duty service personnel. This year, we hope to raise funds to help Tamworth reach their goal of adding memorials for all conflicts to their Veteran’s Memorial and Ossipee create a special place for veterans in the park the Main Street Program is building in Center Ossipee. Lots of people want to show their appreciation to those who protect the home front both here and overseas.

This year, we have at least 9 new chefs competing along with last year’s contestants. The event promises to be full of great food, good fun, music and merriment. We tip our “chef’s hats” off to businesses and vendors who are donating generously of their time and goods to help make this event a success. Some are even beginning to talk about next year’s competition. Advance tickets are being sold at Lazy Susan’s Restaurant and Valuland in Center Ossipee; the South Tamworth Country Store and the Brass Heart Inn in Chocorua. Tickets are moving quickly and the public is encouraged to get one soon. They cost $10.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to invite active duty service personnel who are home on leave to join us as our guests for the Chefs’ Pants Off at the Brass Heart Inn, Chocorua, January 17th from 6 to 9pm.

Sincerely,

Dave Dube, Center Ossipee

Don Harte, Chocorua

Dave Haskell, South Tamworth

Experts Chart Roadmap for Ossipee Main Street

The Ossipee Main Street Program has received sound guidance from national experts on everything from streetscape design to organization growth, based on a 4-day visit to the town in early Fall. In a new 73-page report, “Ossipee Main Street Program….” the Main Street resource team praised Ossipee achievements and enthusiasm since the town was named a Main Street community in 2005, and recommends key strategies and action steps for the next 12-36 months.

“We’re delighted Ossipee got a positive report card from the experts, and we’re very pleased to get the team’s strategic recommendations for sound growth over the next few years,” said Sarah Millette, Ossipee Main Street Executive Director.

During their busy Sept. 10-13 fact-finding trip the resource team met over 100 town residents, officials, business and property owners, and Main Street volunteers. The report details findings and recommendations shared first with the public at a Sept. 13 reception. The report can be reviewed at the Ossipee Main Street office (and Library?? On-line??).

“Ossipee Main Street is a non-profit business,” the report notes, “and its business is the facilitation of the revitalization and management of the Downtown of Center Ossipee." Among the many suggestions the team recommends Ossipee Main Street:

• broaden its support base or “ownership” in both public and private sectors to boost funding and investment expansion in the target area; • design the downtown streetscape, park and parking for both beauty and utility; • focus on 3-4 high quality, sponsored events each year like the Ossipee Economic Fair to attract residents and visitors downtown; • celebrate every success of businesses and renovations in the target area; and • communicate news of progress widely, from work on the new town park and Main Street office building to volunteer efforts.

“The recommendations are a wonderful roadmap to strengthen our volunteer base and streamline our work to ensure Main Street is a permanent, professional asset to town revitalization,” said Pat Jones, Chair of the Ossipee Main Street Board of Directors.

Resource team members were: Deborah Turcott, Program Associate for NH Main Street Center; Malcolm Johnstone, Executive Director for the West Chester BID in Pennsylvania; Tim Reinders, architectural design consultant with the Main Street Iowa Program; and Jef Buehler, State Coordinator for Main Street New Jersey. The team visit to Ossipee comprises part of the technical assistance the town receives in its first five years of Main Street program entry.

The Ossipee Main Street Program is a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing the historic town center. Guided by the NH Main Street Organization in Concord and backed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Ossipee is one of 20 towns in the self-help program. The office is located at 10 Moultonville Rd., Center Ossipee. Call 539 7200 for more information or go to: www.ossipeemainstreet.org

Guests will be able to enjoy some of the best food in the area as well as participate in a raffle and judge the contestants. There will also be a cash bar and entertainment. Tickets will be $10. Guests who purchase tickets in advance will be entered into a special raffle. Locations where tickets can be purchased will be announced soon. In the meantime, call Dave Dube Lazy Susan’s 539-3340, Don Harte The Brass Heart Inn 323-7766, or Sarah Millette Ossipee Main Street Program 539-7200 for more information or a chef’s contestant entry form.

“I’ m very excited about this year’s Pants Off. Last year, we had a sell out crowd at Lazy Susan’s and were able to support many Veterans’ families who faced a variety of difficulties because their loved one was far from home serving our country. This year, the Brass Heart Inn (one of last year’s participating chefs), volunteered to help out and provide us with their larger, newly heated facility. We decided to donate this year’s proceeds to 2 projects: Ossipee’s Main Street Program and the Tamworth Veterans Memorial, said Dave.
‘Ossipee Main Street is very grateful for the support and generosity of Dave, Don Harte of the Brass Heart Inn and the Tamworth Veterans Memorial Committee. When the Ossipee Main Street Board learned of Dave’s offer, they were overwhelmed with appreciation and those who attended the event last year wanted to know where to get tickets”, said Pat Jones, Board President. “Recently Ossipee’s new park received a very generous donation of an American Liberty Elm (tree) from the Elm research Institute. We are very excited about the prospect of placing a bench in honor of all veterans under this tree in our new park, said Main Street Director, Sarah Millette. “After all, that’s what our guys and gals are doing overseas, defending home fronts. There’s nothing more symbolic of the home front than your home town park”, added Dave.

The Ossipee Main Street Program is a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing the historic town center. Guided by the NH Main Street Center in Concord and backed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Ossipee is one of 20 towns in the self-help program. The Tamworth Veterans Memorial Committee is raising funds for a “Walk of Honor” and two additional monuments to honor veterans who have served during World War II and all other conflicts up to the present. Dave Haskell of the Tamworth Veterans Memorial Committee said, “We are amazed that Dave has stepped up to support the Veterans of Tamworth once again.” Tamworth Veterans Memorial Committee is under the auspices of The Tamworth Foundation’s non-profit 501(c)3.

Nov. 21 Meeting: Skateboard Park for Ossipee?

Ossipee Town Hall

Tuesday, November 21

6:30 PM

This public discussion will determine community support to create a seasonal or year round skateboard facility.

Hosted by the Ossipee Recreation Department and supported by the Ossipee Main Street Program, the meeting is open to all and especially to parents and young people who would be willing to work to realize such a facility.

For more information about the skate board project contact: Ossipee Recreation Director Peter Waugh at 539 1307 or Sarah Millette, Ossipee Main Street director, at 539 7200.

  1. END ###

Back ground:

Ossipee has never had a designated skateboard park. A site long used by skaters on Moultonville Road no longer supports informal skateboarding because it is being transformed into a community park through the Ossipee Main Street Program. A permanent or seasonal skateboard facility could be located at other Town sites if there is community support for the concept and willingness to raise funds to create one.

The Ossipee Main Street Program is a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing the historic town center. Guided by the NH Main Street Organization in Concord and backed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Ossipee is one of 20 towns in the self-help program.
